Microsoft Recall

On May 20, Microsoft® introduced a new function called “Recall”. While the fanboys are celebrating, the data protectionists are horrified.

Roughly speaking, “Recall” works as follows:

  • A screenshot is taken every 5 seconds and saved locally*.
  • The screenshots are analyzed using artificial intelligence (image and text recognition) and the result is saved locally* again.
  • If you can’t remember something, ask “Recall” what you want to know.

(*) Here we have to trust Microsoft® because we cannot see the source code.

So you can search for it if necessary or anyone who has access to your PC can also search for it. By now at the latest, it should be clear to everyone what can happen if your PC is hacked.

  • “Who’s going to hack me, I’m not that important!”

This sentence may be honest and well-intentioned, but crackers can do a lot of damage with your PC and the data about you. I’ll list a few of them here:

  • Form a botnet with hundreds and thousands of PCs.
  • Carry out illegal activities with your PC and your IP address.
  • Use your credit card details.

These are simple ideas that come to mind. But a cracker can do more with such data.

“Data is the oil of the 21st century!”

Something like this would not work with Linux. There is an audio software called “Audacity®” and in the past they intended to collect telemetry data. A lot of people, if not the whole Internet, had spoken negatively about it. They didn’t realize the idea, but the community created a few alternatives like Tenacity and Saucedacity.

There was not, is not and never will be an alternative to Microsoft® Windows®. Because it is proprietary software!

Take a look at Linux Mint, because it is for beginners. Both installation and operation are simple. Just give it a try, you won’t regret it!
